Facebook Is Removing It's "Trending" Section | Optimize

The removal of Facebooks "Trending" section comes after a series of major changes to Facebook since the GDPR meltdown, including the removal of third-party apps and products that include "Trends API" to enhance user experience.

Facebook introduced "Trending" in 2014 as a way to help their users to discover trending news and articles that are popular across Facebook, with very little personalization.

Trending was limited to 5 countries, and accounted for about 1.5% of clicks, and Facebooks plans to integrate more user-centric content, with the primary goal of enhancing mobile experience.


The removal of the Trending Section will be followed with the addition of a few new sections still under testing.

Facebook is working with hundreds of trustworthy sources of news to add:


  • Breaking News: They've recently tested the addition of a "breaking news indicator" with over 80 publishers across the world, which would be added to their News Feed, including notifications.

  • Today In: Facebook is adding a section called "Today In", allowing users to stay updated with local news publishers, as well as local officials and organizations.

  • News Video in Watch: An exciting addition to the Watch section: a place where people in the US can watch live news coverage daily.


If you're interested to learn more, well, there's not much more out of Facebook as of just yet, but these changes come with an air of excitement, as Facebook has really needed to work on their news section.

Hopefully with these changes, Facebook will start showing its users more relevant content.
